Sporadic cloud-based mobile augmentation on the top of a virtualization layer: a case study of collaborative downloads in VANETs
Current approaches to Cloud-based Mobile Augmentation (CMA) leverage (cloud-based) resources to meet the requirements of rich mobile applications, so that a terminal (the so-called application node or AppN) can borrow resources lent by a set of collaborator nodes (CNs). In the most sophisticated approaches proposed for vehicular scenarios, the collaborators are nearby vehicles that must remain together near the application node because the augmentation service is interrupted when they move apart. This leads to disruption in the execution of the applications and consequently impoverishes the mobile users’ experience. This paper describes a CMA approach that is able to restore the augmentation service transparently when AppNs and CNs separate. The functioning is illustrated by a NaaS model where the AppNs access web contents that are collaboratively downloaded by a set of CNs, exploiting both roadside units and opportunistic networking. The performance of the resulting approach has been evaluated via simulations, achieving promising results in terms of number of downloads, average download times, and network overheadMinisterio de Educación y Ciencia | Ref. Sporadic cloud-based mobile computing mechanisms to deploy and support services in ad-hoc vehicular networks
Technological advances in the areas of communications, software and microelectronics
have allowed the development of high-performance devices, carried by most
people and even by the vehicles that travel in cities around the world. The possibility
that people and vehicles can be connected allows satisfying communication,
information and entertainment needs. On the one hand, pedestrians in the city can
contact their social circle and download content from the Internet; on the other,
vehicles can obtain and share information regarding traffic and their environment.
Counting on common resources of Information and Communication Technologies
(ICTs), a synergy arises that points to the formation of hybrid communication networks,
as basic pillars of the smart cities of the future.
The creation of communication networks for pedestrians and vehicles entails
great challenges, mainly due to their mobility. In this sense, ad-hoc mobile networks
(MANETs) and ad-hoc vehicular networks (VANET) have been proposed to enable
wireless communications between devices without the need for a fixed infrastructure.
The main objective of this thesis was the design, implementation and evaluation of
a set of mechanisms and processes that enable the sharing of resources (computing,
communication, storage, sensing, etc.) between mobile devices that are part of the
same network. The concept of sporadic augmentation clouds was developed, meaning
that variable sets of devices collaborate for short periods of time to reliably support
the deployment of a wide range of communication services.
To reach the proposed objective, it was necessary to consider several aspects. The
first one is related to the mobility of the devices (especially those on board vehicles),
which degrades the reliability and efficiency of communications. Many previous efforts
have been made to design algorithms and protocols to support communications.
One of these efforts was presented by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (MIT), who defined the concept of virtual nodes, so that a group of
nodes located within a geographical area could emulate the behavior of one only
static node, with greater capabilities and accessible to all others. This thesis makes
contributions to this approach, needed to function correctly in the most dynamic
environments.
A second aspect to consider was the need to develop a routing protocol that
would work on virtual nodes and consider the topology of an urban center. In this
way, the routing protocol would ensure a more efficient and fluid communication,
supporting the processes and mechanisms destined for the formation of sporadic
augmentation clouds.
The third aspect considered was to properly establish the processes and mechanisms
that would allow the formation of sporadic clouds and the adequate sharing of the resources available within them. Linked to this, collaborative schemes were established
to encourage the nodes to collaborate in the different tasks associated with
communications and the sharing of resources, as well as to improve the performance
of the proposal with regard to the use of the transmission medium.
The contributions in all these areas were validated through simulations of collaborative
download services, in different scenarios and in comparison with previous
schemes, representative of the state-of-the-art in the matter. The analysis of the results
showed that the contributions of this thesis considerably improve the number
of downloads and the average time in which a certain piece of content is grasped.
These evidences lead to believing that the concept of augmentation developed here
could become the cornerstone of new communications services for smart cities in
general, and for intelligent transport systems in particular.Gobierno de la República del EcuadorUniversidad Politécnica Salesiana del Ecuado

VaNetChain: a framework for trustworthy exchanges of information in VANETs based on Blockchain and a virtualization layer
Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) face challenges related to the reliability of the data exchanged and the unstability of the communication links. These shortcomings have hampered the development of the long-awaited applications that would turn roads into a smart environment. We present a framework to deploy such services, in which a virtualization layer ensures means to efficiently deliver messages between vehicles and roadside units (RSUs) and, on top of that, blockchain technology is used to enable features of data integrity, traceability, and reliability that cannot be furnished by existing consensus and reputation mechanisms. A simulation experiment is included to determine the optimal number of RSUs to be installed as supporting infrastructure in a city.España. Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad | Ref. Intersection Intelligence: Supporting Urban Platooning with Virtual Traffic Lights over Virtualized Intersection-Based Routing
The advent of the autonomous car is paving the road to the realization of ideas that will help optimize traffic flows, increase safety and reduce fuel consumption, among other advantages. We present one proposal to bring together Virtual Traffics Lights (VTLs) and platooning in urban scenarios, leaning on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication protocols that turn intersections into virtual containers of data. Newly-introduced protocols for the combined management of VTLs and platoons are validated by simulation, comparing a range of routing protocols for the vehicular networks with the baseline given by common deployments of traditional traffic lights ruled by state-of-the-art policies. The simulation results show that the combination of VTLs and platoons can achieve significant reductions in travel times and fuel consumption, provided that proper algorithms are used to handle the V2V communications
